Chefchaouen: The Blue Pearl of Morocco
Tucked away in the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco lies one of the country’s most enchanting towns—Chefchaouen, famously known as The Blue Pearl. Why Is Chefchaouen Painted Blue?
One of the most iconic features of Chefchaouen is undoubtedly its blue-painted walls. The origin of this tradition has several theories. The most widely accepted one dates back to the 15th century when Jewish refugees fled the Spanish Inquisition and settled in the town. They brought with them a tradition of painting buildings blue to symbolize the sky and heaven, serving as a spiritual reminder. Over time, this aesthetic choice stuck and became a defining characteristic of the city. Others believe the blue keeps mosquitoes away or helps cool the buildings by reflecting sunlight. Whatever the reason, the result is breathtaking.
A Glimpse Into Chefchaouen’s History
Founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, Chefchaouen began as a small fortress to defend against Portuguese invasions. The name comes from the Berber word “Iskaouen”, meaning “the horns”, referring to the mountain peaks surrounding the town. Initially closed to foreigners, Chefchaouen preserved its unique blend of Arab, Berber, Jewish, and Andalusian influences for centuries. Only in the 20th century did it open up more broadly to visitors, slowly gaining fame for its peaceful ambiance and photogenic beauty.
Getting to Chefchaouen
From Marrakech – Although Marrakech and Chefchaouen are on opposite sides of the country, it’s still quite doable. The journey takes around 8–10 hours by car or bus. You can take a CTM or Supratours bus from Marrakech to Chefchaouen with a stopover in Fes or Tangier. Alternatively, take a train from Marrakech to Fes, then a bus or taxi to Chefchaouen. Flying to Tangier and traveling from there is also an option for saving time.
From Tangier – The trip from Tangier is much shorter and more popular among travelers. Chefchaouen is about 2 to 2.5 hours away by shared taxi or bus. CTM buses offer regular, comfortable rides between the two cities. The drive itself is scenic, winding through hills and valleys—making the journey part of the experience.
